Help and FAQ
I want to upload some fic. Are there any tips on how to do that? Yes, over at the Submission guidelines. The software is pretty self-explanatory. You can learn almost everything you need to know by playing with the software. You input my fiction, and now I want to add or edit my own. How do I log onto the fic-archiving software? Tell the system that you forgot your password (see below). Please do not create a new username. Keep the one that's currently in the system. I forgot my password! What do I do now? To obtain a password, click here, click on "Lost Password," and enter your e-mail address. A temporary password will be sent to you automatically. Then you can log in with your username (check Authors to see what it is) and the new password, which you may now change. If a password isn't sent to you in a reasonable amount of time, maybe we have the wrong e-mail address on file for you. Try any alternative e-mail addresses you can think of. If all of these fail, contact the Archivist and tell you her want to log in. She will fix the e-mail address, then release you, and the system will send you a password. I want to delete all the fic I wrote off W5C. How can I do that? First, if you want to keep your pseud, so you can comment, just go through and manually delete all your fics. Second, if you want your name deleted as well as your fic, you can contact us and we will delete it all. To do this, you have to prove to us that you own the writing pseud by e-mailing us from the e-mail account registered at W5C. Although we will do takedowns of fic with no questions asked, we hope authors will reconsider and keep their fic on the site. For example, at W5C, the admins (but not the authors) can change a pseud associated with fic, so rather than take it down, we could alter the authorship info to something more acceptable. Another option might be to copy all the fic over to the Archive of Our Own and then orphan it, thereby removing the author's name from the fic (W5C's software doesn't have that capability). We think fic is an important historical document, an integral part of the community that creates and consumes it, and thus we hate to see it go. What kinds of stories are allowed? Pretty much anything about Enterprise is fine by us. But check out our Submission guidelines. How do I submit stories? If you're an author who already has fic on the site, ask for a password so you can log in under the same username. If you're new to the site, register for an account. Once you've logged in, click on Member Account and choose Add New Story. The form presented there will allow you to submit your story. If you're a first-time poster (even if you have fic on the site), there will be a slight delay while the site editors review and then validate the story. I'm not a writer. I just read fic at the site. Do I need a login? No. You can access all the fic without creating a login. However, only registered, logged-in users may leave comments. This policy is in place to avoid spam. Why does the date appear after the summary for so many fics? We loaded in all the fic that appeared in the old AutoArchive fic archive in early 2006, and to contextualize the fic, the dates of original composition or upload were added after the summaries so it was clear that the fic was not new. If you're adding new fic, you don't need to add the date in the summary, because the date stamp the computer adds will be correct. If you're loading in old fiction of your own, adding the date would be helpful to your readers, but it's not required. Whoa. A lot of fic was input at the same time. How can I find stuff? Because the date was input in the "Summary" field, you can Search for the year and get a return for all fics posted that year. Under "Warnings," you've got stuff like "Futurefic" and "AU," which aren't really scary, per se. What's up with that? Basically they are sort criteria. We had to stick them there because of limitations of the software. Just work with us here, okay? What is Treksoap RPG? It's a blog-based role-playing game. Visit Treksoap for more. My fic doesn't really fit into any of the existing categories. Will you create one for me? Maybe. E-mail us and ask. Otherwise, just categorize it in the "other" category, because that's what it's for. Will you load in fic for me if I send you the documents? Yes. Who sponsors the site? The site is affiliated with the EntSTSlash and EntSTFic Yahoo! groups. As a courtesy to these members, fiction is uploaded from these lists approximately quarterly by the Archivist (although EntST* members can of course upload their own fiction if they want). The site is paid for by the Webmistress and the site owner. We gratefully accept donations, which are processed by PayPal and go straight to Vox Populli, our fan- and slash-friendly Web host. How do I contact the site administrators? You can e-mail us via our contact form. |
